Dog bite

HI Y'LL,
SO ON TOP OF EVERYTHING ELSE,I GET BIT BY A DOG. I WENT TO A LOCAL SHELTER AND GOT BIT BY THIS DOG RIGHT TRU THE FENCE!!HE DREW BOOD AND PUNCTURED MY SKIN. I CLEANED IT THOROLLY AND PUT SOME ANTIBIOTIC ON IT. I CALLED A FRIEND OF MINE AND TOLD HIM ABOUT IT, AND HE SAID THAT I HAVE TO REPORT IT BECAUSE MY STATE HAS A TWO BITES AND YOUR DEAD LAW. I DON'T WANT TO REPORT THE DOG.THE PEOPLE AT THE SHELTER WERE VERY BLAZE ABOUT IT, AND ASSURED ME THAT ALL THE DOGS HAVE ALL THEIR SHOTS. THEY SAID IT WAS STRANGE THAT HE BIT ME, HE WAS A REAL SWEETHEART!! HA!! SO NOW I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO.I NEED SOME ADVICE. HAS ANYBODY HAD
ANY EXPERIENCE WITH DOGS AND BITES?PLEASE HELP!!!THANKS ANGELO

IF the dog is up on his shots including rabies vaccination. Then its no different than any other wound. keep it clean, keep it covered and put some antibiotics on it and just keep a check on it for any redness, swelling, etc.
Did you reach thru the fence to pet him and he bit you?
In a shelter already, if he bit somebody, he has probaby already been killed. Shelters wont place dogs that bite, its too much of a liability. any dog that comes in that has abite record doesnt even make it to a kennel, it gets put down right away. People who dump their dogs at shelters.......they are usually put down after a couple days if not right away depending on crowding.
As for the shelter being blaisee about you getting bit. You have to have worked at an animal shelter to understand........you pretty much go numb to everything, you work automatically and robotically, you have to or you would go insane. They knew as soon as you said you were bit, that another dog was going to be killed that day. along with dozens of others who may have never bitten anyone, never done anything wrong, they just got thrown away because they became "inconvenient" or too much of a bother or they werent "cute" and playful anymore.
sorry, went off on a tangent there.
The bite should be fine, since they said he has all his shots, just treat it like any other injury. any sign of infection, redness, swelling, not healing, unusual pain, etc. see a Dr. or go over to the emergency room.

Hey Karen,
Thanks for the input. It was strange ,I don't know what provoked him,he was barking and wagging his tail, so I aproached him near the cage with my hand to have him smell me, and I don't how he got his mouth thru the small hole of the fencing or able to open his mouth to bite me, it hapenned so fast. When I told the woman that was working there that I got bit and if she had something to clean the bite, she looked at me like I was nuts and bothering her.She had a cigarette dangling from her mouth and I was choking from the smoke.Very unfriendly, so she points to a sink and says "help yourself. As I'm washing my hand,I got bit on the knockle,I was trying to get some information about the dog and if he has bitten anybody and if he had all his shots, she just shrugged with that cigarette still dangling from her mouth, she tells me that the dog is a sweetheart and probebly din't like my smell.Like it was a joke.I got so upset that I had to get out of there. What an experience. The shelter is suposed to be a no kill and volenteer. It looked pretty clean the animals were all inside.Anyway I don't want to make a big deal about it,especialy if the poor animal gets put down.I have had dogs all my life and never got seriously bit.Anyway thanks for the advise and hope It heals good.I had a triple about two years ago ,and Im diabetic with everything that goes along with it , so I'm a little worried about it.I'll see what happens for a few days.
P.S. HI JERRY,I'm doing fine thanks for asking and remembering me.
Thanks ,
angelo

Many years ago, my youngest daughter was riding her bike, when a neighbour's dog ran out and bit her on the leg. It was not a bad bite, but it did break the skin. We took her to the hospital, where she was given a tetnus shot. The dog did have it's shots, but the following Monday, I got a call from the health board telling me that the dog was going to be quaranteened for two weeks and they would call me with the results. They did call me and the dog was fine. I never saw that dog running loose again.
I would see what your doctor has to say about it. It is better to be safe than sorry.

PS If you are looking to adopt a dog,we adopted a greyhound two years ago. She was retired from racing. They are wonderful dogs, nice and quiet and quite commical.

I'm sorry you were bit, how sad for everyone ! I was bit when I was a kid, I was running and surprised a German Shepherd who sprang out and bit me . My Grandma was with me, and she talked to the owner and found out the dog had had it's shots, so she took me to the Dr for antibiotics and a shot . Funny,
but I grew up to adore dogs, have no fear at all amd dogs like me . I like all sizes and types, though my heart goes out to the toy dogs, I love Shih
Tzus . I hope the wound heals soon .
